Scam Wow! Infomercial
This video project was orchestrated to highlight many of the false claims made by the SoccerCity initiative. SoccerCity was a proposed development project in San Diego, California, aimed at transforming the site of the former Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley into a mixed-use area centered around a new soccer stadium. However, many San Diegans were unhappy with the proposal, feeling it primarily benefited the developers rather than the community.
I was part of a team brought in by a group of San Diego taxpayers to highlight some of the cons of the SoccerCity proposal. Collaborating with my colleagues, we developed a script, and another former colleague played the role of a SoccerCity salesman. My job was to film my colleague in a studio setting, making it appear as if he was selling infomercial products. The shoot was fun and energetic.
After filming, I began post-production with the idea of presenting the content as if selling a product to many viewers. Using b-roll footage captured a few days earlier of the old Qualcomm Stadium, alongside shots of the stadium land and some simple infomercial-style motion graphics I created, the campaign video ad turned out to be a big success due to its humorous nature.
In the November 2018 election, Measure G (SDSU West) passed, while Measure E (SoccerCity) did not receive enough support. As a result, SDSU proceeded with its plans to develop the site, and the SoccerCity proposal was effectively shelved.
